Ethyl Alcohol (EtOH)
Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol (abbreviated as EtOH), is a type of alcohol and an organic chemical compound with the molecular formula C₂H₆O.
This substance is naturally produced through the fermentation of sugars by yeasts or via petrochemical processes such as ethylene hydration. Ethanol is widely used as a chemical solvent and in the blending of organic compounds.
Ethanol is also an alternative fuel source and a versatile solvent that is miscible with water and many organic solvents.

Medical Applications
Absolute ethanol is used in the treatment of vascular malformations. Ethanol is widely used as a disinfectant in medical wipes and hand sanitizing gels due to its bactericidal and antifungal properties.
Ethanol, often at high concentrations, is used to dissolve many water-insoluble drugs and related compounds.
Fuel Applications
Ethanol is used as a motor fuel, primarily as a biofuel additive for gasoline. It is also used in jet fuel and aviation fuel formulations and is applied in fuel cells.
Precursor for Organic Compounds
Ethanol is an important industrial material. It is widely used as a precursor for other organic compounds such as ethyl halides, ethyl esters, diethyl ether, acetic acid, and ethylamines.
Solvent Applications
Ethanol is considered a universal solvent because its molecular structure allows it to dissolve both polar (hydrophilic) and nonpolar (hydrophobic) compounds.
Due to its relatively low boiling point, ethanol can be easily removed from solutions, making it a popular extraction agent for vegetable oils.
Cosmetic and Personal Care Products
Ethanol is used in the perfume, cologne, and fragrance industries, as well as in the production of a wide range of cosmetic and personal care products.
Paint and Ink Industry (Solvent and Thinner)
One of the properties of industrial alcohol is its rapid and easy miscibility with water. Ethanol–water mixtures form organic solutions that can be used as solvents and thinners in artistic and industrial paints.
